Louise Martyn Soprano

Irish Soprano Louise Martyn endeavours to co-create well-informed, authentic and moving performances. She has lived, and trained in conservatoires in Ireland, the UK and Switzerland and studies with Vera Wenkert in Institut Stimmkunst. Louise recently moved to Edinburgh.

                As a lover of Irish Language and Heritage, she created a recording in 2018 with Pianist Annalisa Monticelli in commemoration of the poet Francis Ledwidge, titled Lon ag longhaire A blackbird singing and regularly performs this repertoire in recitals and concerts. Recent collaborators to celebrate the life of Francis Ledwidge include Irish Composer Michael Holohan and the Irish Group Anúna. In 2019, Louise was privileged to sing the role of Cathleen in Vaughan Williams’s Riders to the Sea in Biel Theatre under the direction of Franco Trinca, with the Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn (TOBS) Orchestra.

                 Louise believes in the power of art to create a more compassionate world. A passionate lover of the great lyric operatic roles, she has sung selections of Contessa, Liù, Marietta, Mimi, Rusalka and Arabella in Ireland, Germany and Switzerland and has sung in full Suor Genovieffa and First Alms Sister in Puccini’s Suor Angelica. This soprano made her debut as the glamorous Kate Pinkerton in a TOBS Production of Madama Butterfly in 2019 which included an extensive national tour in Switzerland. She sang the role of Dido during her time in Birmingham Conservatoire. Having grown up singing in church, Louise regularly appears on the Oratorio Stage and enjoys this repertoire most sincerely. Upcoming engagements include a Mozart Mass and Vivaldi’ Gloria, both in Switzerland. Other recent experience includes sharing the role of Young Lady in Lady Sarashina in an interesting production with its composer Peter Eötvös and Bern University of the Arts in 2019.

                A lifelong lover of learning, Louise frequently attends masterclasses with Vera Wenkert and has become as associated teacher of the SONARA-VERA® Method developed by Mrs Wenkert. Other masterclass facilitators include Thomas Barthel, Ann Beckman and Yulia Levin from Operhaus Zürich, Capucine Chiaudani and Emma Kirkby. In competition, she was awarded the ​Gervase Elwes Cup ​and the ​Percy Whitehead Cup ​in the ​2015 ESB Feis Ceoil in Ireland. ​At the Royal Irish Academy of Music she won the prize for English Song in the ​Irene Sandford Competition​ and the ​Gaiety Bursary, having previously won an English Song Prize in the UK. She has worked with directors such as Louis Désiré, Tom Creed, Kami Manns, Ben Barnes, Mathias Behrends and Michael Barry and conductors Franco Trinca, Manlio Benzi, Andrew Synnott, David Brophy and Nicholas Chalmers among others.
